Green Lake’s History

This PI piece on the history of Green Lake is awesome. Among the gems:

  • in 1911, Seattle Approved an awesome new park system, but Green Lake had been so popular that there wasn’t room anymore. They drained the lake and freed up 100 acres of land.
  • The Green Lake Itch is about 100 years old.
  • Green Lake was home to hydroplane races until the 1980s!
  • There used to be 4th of July fireworks and Bite of Seattle here (but my guess is grumpy rich boring people complained too much and they moved it.)
  • Bob Hope has performed at the Aqua Theatre.

Edit: Mom sent me this sweet map of Green Lake from 1936.
